Unvergessen die Szene, als ich im letzten November meinen Mitarbeitern vom Simply Red Konzert berichtete und mich anschließend eine Auszubildende fragte: „Was machen die denn eigentlich für Musik?“
Beim Thema „Musik“ merkt man, dass man älter wird. Und so wird auch kaum eine Mitarbeiterin verstehen warum mich die Nachricht heute Morgen vom Tod von Maurice White wirklich traurig gestimmt hat. Ich weiß gar nicht wie viele Lebensstunden ich die Stimme von Maurice White (und Philip Bailey) gehört habe. Aneinandergereiht sind das sicherlich viele Wochen. Maurice White war der Gründer und eine der Stimmen von „Earth, Wind & Fire“.
„Earth, Wind & Fire“ waren eine der musikalisch vollendetesten, von den Kritikern gerühmtesten und kommerziell erfolgreichsten Funkbands der 70er Jahre. Ihre musikalische Vision benutzte Funk als Grundlage und fügte dann auch Jazz, Soul, Gospel, Pop, Rock´n´Roll, Blues, afrikanische Musik und natürlich Disco hinzu. Ich sehe mich noch, wie ich in den 80ern in Clubs wie der „Tenne“, dem „Intermezzo“ oder dem „Mezanotte“ zu Songs wie „September“ oder „Let´s Groove“ die Nacht durchgetanzt habe. Ende der 80er habe ich die Band auch in der „Alsterdorfer Sporthalle“ live gesehen. Was für eine Stimmung!
Mitte der 90er Jahre hat Maurice White seine Erkrankung an Parkinson öffentlich gemacht. Seit Ende der 90er Jahre hat er nicht mehr gemeinsam mit der Band auf der Bühne gestanden. Heute Nacht ist er im Alter von 74 Jahren gestorben. Die Welt hat einen weiteren großartigen Musiker und eine Legende verloren.
Seine Songs leben weiter – unter anderem auch auf den Playlisten in unseren Salons.
